"The best bit was where the mouse saved the lion!" vouched Kelsey, aged six, after the recent Sunday afternoon performance of Aesop’s Fables at Saltburn Community Theatre.
Moveable Feast Productions Company brought their show, aimed at five to eleven year olds, from Leeds. They wrote the play themselves, giving the four actors ample scope for portraying a variety of characters and animals, based around Aesop’s Fables.
Using an evocative backdrop, the company set their scene at Mr and Mrs Aesop’s cottage, deep in the forest. Early on, Mrs. Aesop showed her frustration at her husband’s inability to do anything but tell stories. Fortunately for the audience, he outwitted her and presented us with five absorbing fables, including The Lion and the Mouse and One Good Turn Deserves Another.
Such were Aesop’s skills that a passing traveller reported them to Queen Hippolyta of Athens and he was offered the position of Royal Storyteller to Her Highness. His task would be to tell a different story every day to the hundreds of people of Athens. Mrs Aesop, now reconciled to her husband, agreed to take up the post of Royal Carpenter and we were assured that, in the best of traditions, all lived happily ever after.
Successful efforts were made by the actors to involve the audience. The children joined in songs, watched the hare and the tortoise race around their seats and occasionally found a threatening masked animal loping towards them.
"I thought the bear was scary," judged three year old Tegan, but Dylan, aged four disagreed: "It was the lion that was scariest!"
There were references to Bob the Builder, Weetabix and the visit to the dentist, which all children recognise. Welsh and American accents gave variety, as did an impressive array of costumes and props. In all, Moveable Feast Productions brought us seventy minutes of great fun, which absorbed children and adults alike.
We are lucky to have such good live performances on our doorstep!"
